Streatham Miss Out as Chipstead Hang On

Chipstead 10-7 Streatham-Croydon

by Jeff Greenleaf

Streatham-Croydon failed in their bid to beat promotion favourites Chipstead in an extremely close and hard fought contest at the Meads on Saturday. Streatham failed to make the most of several scoring chances and consequently suffered a defeat that effectively rules them out of the promotion race for this season.

The Frant Road side started strongly and made several forays into the Chipstead 22 but were repulsed by some outstanding defence. Then, against the run of play, [...]

Wizards Leave Warlingham Spellbound

Under 13s Go Top

Streatham-Croydon Wizards 29-7 Warlingham B

On a very wet day the Wizards played a tight game plan, with the forwards and backs running great lines and trying to expand the game when they could in difficult conditions.

The main strengths were the scrums working extremely well pushing Warlingham off their put-in and winning our own scrums convincingly. Our ball carrying and off loads gained us space and the ability to break the gain line time and time again.

The backs made [...]

Bonus Point is Worth the Wait

Streatham-Croydon 24-8 Worth Old Boys

by Ben Alsop

It seemed to take an age but eventually Streatham-Croydon remembered how to play effective rugby and ran out relatively comfortable winners against Surrey 2’s bottom side Worth Old Boys. The lack of any meaningful preparation due to inclement weather which has swept across the country certainly showed as both teams punctuated the opening exchanges with mistakes and imprecision. First blood was drawn by the away side with a well struck penalty dissecting the posts. [...]

Streatham Squander Chance to put Pressure on Surrey 2 Leaders

Mike Jackson breaks a tackle

 Streatham-Croydon 25-38 Old Emanuel

by Ben Alsop

Mike Jackson breaks a tackle

It would have been the worst of all possible starts to the New Year if Streatham hadn’t scored in the final minutes of the second half securing a fourth-try bonus point. Even then it was a performance which suffered from a first half malaise which may have significantly dented Streatham’s promotional aspirations.

The first half began poorly for the home side and became progressively worse at its close. From the kick [...]

Pretorius Hat-Trick Banishes Cup Blues but Bonus Point Proves Elusive

Streatham's Walter Pretorius on the charge against Bec Old Boys

Streatham-Croydon 17-5 Bec Old Boys

by Ben Alsop

There are some matches which have all manner of subtleties and intrigue, making it incredibly difficult to piece together a cohesive narrative. They can be games for which words appear to come up short. This was no such encounter.

Walter makes light work of Bec's no 8

From the festive spirit which had gripped Streatham-Croydon the week before in allowing Farnham to run riot in the cup, a reinstated scrooge-esque display restricted Bec Old Boys [...]

Hard Work is Key for Streatham Cup Clash at Farnham

by Owen Jones

Hard work is the key for Streatham on Saturday as they take on Surrey One leaders Farnham in the 3rd round of the RFU Junior Vase.

Head coach Jeff Greenleaf said his players have the belief to win the tie against high-flying Farnham, who kept up their unbeaten league streak on Saturday with a 13-8 win at Kingston.

“This week is all about hard work” said Greenleaf. “We showed on Saturday that we can play good rugby in atrocious conditions [...]

Streatham Sparkle in the Gloom

Streatham win line-out ball

Streatham-Croydon 36-7 Law Society

by Ben Alsop

In

Old school 70s style rugby

clement weather can be a catalyst to peculiar events. It would be justified to assume that a proliferation of rain and mud would lead to a slow moving, stuttering game where the referee’s whistle is as constant as the ticking of a clock. However on a rain-sodden day in South London Streatham-Croydon produced a display, especially in the second half, which would seem to fly in the face of received [...]

Streatham Gun Down Shooters Hill in Junior Vase

Shooters Hill 12-36 Streatham-Croydon, RFU Junior Vase round two.

by Ben Alsop

On a dank and overcast day in East London Streatham-Croydon shone brightly enough to defeat Shooters Hill and advance, relatively comfortably, into the third round of the RFU Junior Vase. In an often disjointed encounter, it was moments of cohesion from the away side which enabled Streatham to remain in the ascendency for the entire game. Whilst Shooters Hill scored twice their play never unduly worried the Surrey 2 side [...]

Streatham Blow Chance to Impress at Battersea

Streatham's Simon Hampton on the charge against Battersea Ironsides

Battersea Ironsides 33-27 Streatham-Croydon

by Ben Alsop

As Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits cries out in their 1965 version of ‘I’m Henry the VIII I am’, a song made famous by Music Hall star Harry Champion, ‘…second verse same as the first’. It is a declaration which was surely written specifically for Streatham-Croydon who for the second time in as many weeks lost a game that they should have won.

From the low-scoring contretemps that was [...]
